Southwestern Regional BDA Conference Highlights - by Cathy Ware

Dallas Black Deaf Advocates, Chapter 15 welcomed representatives, members and friends to the NBDA's 4th Biennial Southwestern Conference on August 3-5, 2012 at the Embassy Suites - Love Field in Dallas, TX. Its Southwestern Region chapter members: Dallas, Houston, Little Rock, AR, and New Orleans.  We were honored to have our NBDA President, Benro Ogunyipe in attendance.

Dallas BDA President Rochelle Doss welcomed guests with the conference theme “Let’s Get Our Shine On”. On Saturday, we had the following exhibitors: Purple VRS, Lovely Lilies Jewelry Inc. Mary Kay, NBDA, North American Power, and Sorenson Communications.

The following workshops were presented: 

  • NBDA’s 30 Years of Advocacy: The People, The Leadership, & The  Movement. By Benro Ogunyipe
  • North American Power - Change for You as a Consumer and for Humanity at Large. By Frank McGilvery and Anthony Jones
  • Battered  Women’s Foundation By Mary Lou Delehant

At the general meeting, Tanya Brown was elected as the 2012-2014 Southwestern Regional Representative, Joseph Perrodin was selected as the Alternate Representative. Houston, TX is chosen to host the next Southwestern Regional BDA Conference in 2014.

On Saturday night's banquet, Benro Ogunyipe provided keynote address on the path to becoming a successful person. Dallas BDA Queen Thelma Chimani performance in front of the audience.
