Southern Renaissance
By Kristi Merriweather August 2006
Written for Southern Regional Conference 2006
Like a phoenix rising in the purplish dark,
illuminated by glowing coals of forged strength,
shaking off the ashes of dreams deferred/frustrated,
forging a brighter trail ahead,
with amplified gusto upsetting the status quo,
let jade reach her zenith
let wild ideas zapping around,
& take hold of fertile soil upon where Martin Luther King Jr.
thrived
And victory flight to be flown in the land of South,
Southern Renaissance is all happening now,
swirling around dusty lands, urban creations,
greenleafy woods in North C, South C, ‘Bama, “mphis, Nash, VI,
Georgia be on my mind, Ray Ray
Remembering the past,
Living for the present, Working for a different, better future
For our people’s sake and ours, For unity we will,
For empowerment we shall, For love we gonna,
For justice we be steppin’
for the
Southern Renaissance.
