2004 NBDA Conference
A Success in Philadelphia, The Place That Loves You Back
by Vikki Washington, with assistance from Claudia
Gordon, Jubil Khan, and Betty Henderson
Conference Activities
A smorgasbord of workshops wasoffered at the Conference. Topics
in discussion were varied- ranging from cochlear implant technology,
employment discrimination, and identify theft to HIV prevention,
financial well-being, and nonprofit bylaws and policies.
The attendees indulged themselves at an exhibit hall that was packed
with over 20 exhibits. It was a virtual shoppers' paradise, with
attendees browsing and checking out the new products and services
from different companies and businesses.
During
the week, registrants enjoyed some downtime and plenty of refreshments
at receptions sponsored by Galladuet University and Pennsylvania
School for the Deaf (PSD) on August 4 and 5, respectively. Remarks
were delivered by Gallaudet President I. King Jordan, and PSD Superintendent
Joseph Fischgrund.
At the General Meeting on Saturday, August 7, President and 2005
Conference Chair Reginald Redding discussed the latest Conference
planning efforts slated for July 30-August 7, 2005, in Orlando,
Florida. Redding informed the audience that registration information
would be on the NBDA website in the fall.
Another milestone accomplished during the meeting was the passage
of the Regional System. The following table lists the Region Representatives
and the BDA chapters that they will oversee. Effective immediately,
this system replaces the traditional operations of the NBDA. For
more information on the Regional System, visit http://www.nbda.org/news/regionalsystemplans.html
Of equal importance, motion was moved and carried by a 2/3 vote to
suspend the NBDA officers election until 2005. The implementation
of the Regional System was cited as the rationale for the suspension.
