2004 NBDA Conference
A Success in Philadelphia, The Place That Loves You Back

by Vikki Washington, with assistance from Claudia Gordon, Jubil Khan, and Betty Henderson

A Fabulous Affair, Indeed!

The Miss Black Deaf America Pageant took place despite having only two pageant contestants participating in this year's competition. The theme, "A Fabulous Affair," combined the pageant with a dazzling fashion show that left audience members in awe.

Models, both professional and amateur, walked the runway stage dressed in urban, fancy, classy and high couture fashion wear. Young and talented kids performed striking hip-hop dances that seemed to defy gravity, much to the appreciation of the audience. Mistress and Master of Ceremonies Laurene Simms and Warren "WaWa" Snipe spiced up the show with plenty of theatrics and humor of their own.

Former NBDA Queens were also recognized during the pageant. Ronnie Mae Tyson, the first Black Deaf Queen, talked about her life achievements since winning the crown in 1983. Pageant contestants Sophia McFadden (Miss South Carolina BDA) and Erica Miley (Miss District of Columbia BDA) showcased their talents, casual wear, and evening gowns. They both presented strong platforms and held their poise during the stage interview portion of the pageant. The show ended with McFadden winning the crown (see story on page 8).
