FRANKFORT, KY – As part of its 30th Anniversary Celebration in Baltimore, MD, National Black Deaf Advocates, Inc. (NBDA) has a special announcement on the creation of the new education initiative, recognizing the legacy of a Black Deaf pioneer for his years of commitment to educational excellence. The 30th Anniversary Celebration will serve as a fundraiser for the scholarship, enabling funds to be available for Black Deaf students studying in undergraduate or graduate programs. In its 30 years of existence, NBDA has been on the forefront of advocating for the educational advancement of Black Deaf Americans. Under the tutelage of current NBDA President, Benro Ogunyipe, the Development Division has expanded its focus from programming funds development to adding another scholarship opportunity for Black Deaf youth pursuing educational growth.

Despite the after-effects of Hurricane Sandy, NBDA will not cancel the event in a show of support for the Northeast region. More specifically, NBDA aims to reach out to Black Deaf citizens of Baltimore. “We encourage upcoming Black Deaf college students in Baltimore to keep an eye out for the scholarship and apply next year,” said Mr. Ogunyipe, “NBDA looks forward to enjoying the hospitality of Baltimore, and celebrating the accomplishments of our organization, as well as supporting the future of Black Deaf America through education.”

NBDA currently has several avenues through which it advocates for education. The Youth Empowerment Summit is an educational leadership training program for Black Deaf and hard of hearing youth from across the country. For college students, the Collegiate Black Deaf Student Leadership Institute, an intensive leadership training opportunity for minority college students.

“The new education initiative will be open to all Black Deaf and hard of hearing students nationwide. The main goal of this program,” said Mr. Ogunyipe, “is to give our young people the opportunity to succeed in competitive colleges, post-college graduate schools, and professional schools, and assist them in making contributions in science, education, engineering, art, and human services.”

On November 10, 2012, NBDA will host a 30th Anniversary Celebration Gala at Holiday Inn – Inner Harbor, 301 W. Lombard St., Baltimore, MD to commemorate and celebrate NBDA’s years of advocacy.
