Zoe E. Collymore Page Scholarship Fund
The Zoe E. Collymore Page (ZECP) scholarship is for Black Deaf
or hearing students in an Interpreter Training Program (ITP). NBDA
receives numerous correspondence or inquiries regarding financial
assistance from students entering or continuing in an ITP. The scholarship
has been named in honored of a well-known Black interpreter who
is no longer with us except in spirit.
Zoe E. Collymore Page was the first Black student to enter Gallaudet
College Associate Degree Interpreter Training Program. While pursuing
her degree, Zoe was employed by Gallaudet and worked as a residence
education assistant at the Model Secondary School for the Deaf and
a freelance interpreter. She was a founder of Bridges and Sowers,
which was an advocacy support groups for the Deaf, and she was a
member of the Nubian Study Group, an organization for the study
of classical African civilizations.
Zoe made several trips to Brenu Akyinim in Ghana where she found
her roots and wings. After returning to the States, Zoe longed for
Mother Africa. Zoe resigned from her job and returned to the village
in Brenu Akyinim. Zoe received the distinct recognition of being
called a village elder and she was invited to the membership of
the village council, which is consider a distinct honor for an American.
She helped to establish a day care center and raised money for training
in Animal Husbandry. She also trained teacher and helped recruit
a staff to prepare nutritionally balance meals for young children.
Zoe passed away shortly after her return to Africa. Her remains
were accepted into the bosom of Mother Africa and her soul returned
to her Father on October 8, 1993.
