Call for Workshop Proposals

The National Black Deaf Advocates (NBDA) is seeking proposals for presentations on various topics that enhance personal and professional development at the 30th NBDA Conference at the Sheraton Birmingham Hotel on August 8, 2023 - August 13, 2023. The conference theme is Reconnect, Recharge, and Thrive.

All interested presenters (advocates, parents, professionals, professors, students, recent graduates, senior citizens, grassroot and community service workers, and any interested individuals) are invited for presentations in the following broad categories:

  • Advocacy
  • Communication Access
  • Economic Empowerment
  • Educational Success & Opportunities
  • Employment
  • Health Issues
  • History, Language & Culture
  • Independent Living
  • Leadership Development & Mentoring
  • Legal Rights & Issues
  • LGBTQ
  • Interpreter Professional Development
  • Senior Citizen (Including but not limited to: Retirement, Social Security, and Health)
  • Social Justice & Intersectionality
  • Technology & Social Media
  • Youth
  • And Many more aligned with the theme: Reconnect, Recharge, and Thrive.

Presentation Session Types

There are two types of presentation sessions at the conference. Description for each session provided.

  • Professional Development/Informative Session, 75 Minutes
    This session presents specific topic to participants with an additional action, i.e. questions/answers session.
     
  • Round Table Session, 75 Minutes
    This session enables smaller-sized groups of any certain number of participants to make a contribution to discussions on issues of shared concerns and to generate ideas for action.

Selection Process & Presentation Dates

The NBDA Conference Workshop Program Committee oversees all aspects of the conference workshop program and schedule. Workshop proposals are selected based on the overall quality and needs of the conference presentation tracks. Accepted submissions will be scheduled for a specific timeframe as outlined in the presentation session types above. Presentation slots will be prepared for the conference program starting approximately 9:00 am to 2:30 pm each day on Wednesday, August 9, 2023, Thursday, August 10, 2023, and Friday, August 11, 2023. Accepted presenters should be prepared to present during this timeframe, as assigned by Workshop Program Committee, to ensure a scheduled balance of the conference program. Please be advised that not all submitted proposals will be accepted due to the limited slots. Presentations that advertise products or services will not be accepted as the Exhibit Hall is available for this purpose.

All presentation proposals must submit online. To prevent accidental loss of information, we encourage you to prepare your own MS Word doc and then copy/paste content in the online form.

If you have other means of submitting your proposal such as video submission in sign language, please contact conf.workshop@nbda.org.

Deadline Dates

The deadline for all proposal submissions is February 3rd, 2023. Only completed presentation proposals will be considered for review by the NBDA Conference Workshop Program Committee. Prospective presenters will be notified of the acceptance status by March 3rd, 2023. Accepted presenters must confirm their intention to present and provide additional information by March 10, 2023. All deadline dates are subject to change based on the volume of submissions.

Honoraria Fee & Travel Costs

The NBDA Conference Workshop Program Committee regrets that it is unable to offer honoraria or reimburse travel costs for presenters. Expenses such as travel, lodging, and meals shall be the sole responsibility of the presenters and their sponsoring organizations.
