Call for Workshop Proposals

The National Black Deaf Advocates (NBDA) is seeking proposals for presentations on a variety of topics that enhance both personal and professional development at the 29th NBDA Conference to be held at the Oakland Marriott City Center on July 31, 2019 - August 4, 2019. The conference theme is Building Together: A Community of Strength, Knowledge and Power.

All interested presenters (advocates, parents, professionals, professors, students, recent graduates, senior citizens, grassroot and community service workers, and any interested individuals) are invited for presentations in the following broad categories:

  • Workshop option that aligns with theme. Example: Effective Strategies for Building a Collaborative Community

Presentation Session Types

There are four types of presentation sessions at the conference. Description for each session provided.

  • Professional Development/Informative Session, 75 Minutes
    This session presents specific topic to participants with an additional action, i.e. questions/answers session.
  • Consecutive Session, 150 Minutes (Part A 75 Minutes, Part B 75 Minutes)
    Session longer than time allotted regular workshop session to present an in-depth topic or to include demonstration exercises, increased interaction, group discussion, hands-on training or any skill building type of action that requires participation.
  • Round Table Session, 75 Minutes
    This session enables smaller-sized groups of any certain number of participants to make a contribution to discussions on issues of shared concerns and to generate ideas for action.
  • Poster Board Session, 75 Minutes
    A poster board session showcases your project, research or community service works in a room shared with other displayed posters. All presenters of the posters will engage and discuss either through one-on-one or group interactions with conference attendees simultaneously and gather feedback of their works for an hour. After the end of session, all posters will be displayed for a certain period of the day. This presentation format is less formal. Students/graduates and community service workers are greatly encouraged to submit.

Selection Process & Presentation Dates

The NBDA Conference Workshop Program Committee is responsible for overseeing all aspects of conference workshop program and schedule. Workshop proposals are selected based on the overall quality and needs of the conference presentation tracks. Accepted proposals will be scheduled for specific timeframe as outlined in the Presentation Session Types above. Presentation slots will be scheduled to conference program starting approximately 8:30am to 4:00pm each day on Wednesday July 31, 2019, Thursday August 1, 2019, and Friday August 2, 2019. Accepted presenters should be prepared to present during this timeframe, as assigned by Workshop Program Committee to ensure scheduled balance of the conference program. Please be advised that not all proposals that are submitted will be accepted due to limited slots. Presentations that advertise products or services will not be accepted as the Exhibit Hall is available for this purpose.

Deadline Dates

The deadline for all proposal submissions is March 1, 2019 Extended to March 29, 2019. Only completed presentation proposals will be considered for review by the NBDA Conference Workshop Program Committee. Prospective presenters will be notified by April 12, 2019 on the acceptance status of their proposals. Accepted presenters must confirm their intention to present and provide additional information by April 19, 2019. All deadline dates are subject to change based on the volume of submissions.

Honoraria Fee & Travel Costs

The NBDA Conference Workshop Program Committee regrets that it is unable to offer honoraria or reimburse travel costs for presenters. Expenses such as travel, lodging, and meals shall be the sole responsibility of the presenters and their sponsoring organizations.
