About National Black Deaf Advocates

The National Black Deaf Advocates (NBDA) is the official advocacy organization representing thousands of Black Deaf and hard of hearing individuals across the United States. Established in 1982, NBDA was founded by Black Deaf leaders who recognized the need for stronger representation in leadership, policy development, and decision-making processes affecting the lives of Black Deaf and hard of hearing Americans.

Mission

The mission of NBDA is to promote:
  • Leadership development
  • Economic opportunities
  • Educational advancement
  • Social equality
  • Health and welfare of Black Deaf and hard of hearing people

Membership & Community

As a nonprofit, tax-exempt consumer organization, NBDA is supported by members and allies committed to advancing its mission and strategic goals. Membership includes:
  • Black Deaf and hard of hearing individuals
  • Parents of Black Deaf and hard of hearing children
  • Professionals serving Deaf communities
  • Sign language interpreters
  • People of color and allies
  • Interested organizations and community advocates
NBDA also collaborates with more than 30 local Black Deaf Advocate (BDA) chapters nationwide.

Leadership & Governance

NBDA is governed by a volunteer Executive Board made up primarily of Deaf and hard of hearing advocates. Its Board of Directors includes:
  • National officers elected during conferences
  • Regional representatives elected by their regions
  • Appointed board members
This structure helps ensure that Black Deaf voices remain central in organizational leadership and advocacy efforts.
